Established in 1945 by Marcel Gitton with barely one acre, the Gitton Père & Fils estates to-day cover close nearly thirty hectares, situated amongst the best areas of the region. These include such distinctive appellations as Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, known for their Sauvignon Blanc, a grape which represents more than three-quarters of the Gittons’ estate. At present the property is managed by Marcel’s son, Pascal and his wife Denise, as well as their daughter, Chanel.
The Gitton family has become notorious over the years for its respect of traditions, an approach that shows a deep reverence for the terroir. With soils rich in flint and different types of chalk, these wines, sterling examples of the best the Loire region has to offer, are simply exemplary, and are completely estate bottled, with the nuances of each plot rigorously respected.
Indeed, since each vineyard has its own specific characteristics, every effort is made to vinify the individual harvests separately so as to preserve the subtle qualities of the various soils of each. Additionally, each vineyard eschews the use of artificial yeast or enzymes, further embracing the unique complexity that comes from the effect of the Gitton philosophy on vines that average more than thirty years old.
